This is a design for the Natural & Organic Deli inside a large food court at Copper Mountain. I worked with very talented carpenters, welders and electricians to take my concept into the reality of signage, display and commercial space design. I always keep in mind all of the potential applications when I design. The concept needs to be carried throughout, and more and more the commercial space is customized to the feel of the product. We used local beetle-kill pine and had our carpenters beat the hell out of it with an ax, chain and a chisel to give it a aged, worked, weathered look. Plus, it was a great way for them to get their aggression out. (Highly recommended for your stressed-out staff). After, we washed it with a light water based stain to give it a sun-bleached, ocean look.

The take-away from this project is that I planned out everything well before I started to design. I came up with the concept in my head and immediately went and talked with the people involved. Carpenters, electricians, plumbers and myself discussed all of the wood, treatments, colors, stain, cuts, installation, etc. I Drove the builders and project manager crazy with all of my dumb questions so early in the project.
But I was able to design, and we were able to build/install the project without any issues or loss of budget. We avoided a ton of down time and came up with solutions based on talents and budgets and our projects ran smoother and had less "angry surprises". I have always thought of this as part of my job as a designer. And I enjoy learning how the entire process works.
